On 25 August 2026, a meeting in Damascus between President Ahmed Şara and Foreign Minister Esad Şeybani formally ended the independent military structure of the Suriye Demokratik Güç (SDG). The SDG’s military, security and administrative units were incorporated into the Suriye Army and state bodies. The process was built on agreements reached on 10 March 2025 and 29 January 2026, which set the framework for integration and a ceasefire.

The agreement transferred control of border checkpoints, airports and oil fields to the central authority of Damascus. The decommissioning of SDG’s separate military presence was gradual, accelerating after the ceasefire and culminating on 25 August 2026 with full integration.

Politically, senior SDG figures Ferhat Abdi Şahin was offered a presidential advisory role, and İlham Ahmed was nominated for parliament. These appointments are linked to the constitutional status of Kurds, their rights and language‑based education. The SDG’s dissolution aligns with Turkey’s objective of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and border security, and supports the “Terörsüz Türkiye, Terörsüz Bölge” vision in conjunction with the 7595 law. The restructuring of the security landscape along the Iraq‑Syria frontier, including the disbandment of the PKK, marks a new phase in regional stability. New developments will be announced by authorities.
